Maddie’s® Shelter Medicine Externship
Each year, up to four exceptional students will be selected to receive $1500 each to complete a 4-week externship program.

Students will gain a comprehensive overview of the animal sheltering system and develop specific veterinary skills by participating in two two-week externships selected from each of the following types of agencies:

• Open-admission / traditional animal shelter
• Adoption guarantee animal shelter

Complete details about the program and the application process are available here.

Meet some of Maddie’s® Shelter Medicine Externs and read about their experiences.

Choosing Externship Agencies

The student applicant should research the attributes of prospective shelters and spay/neuter clinics to propose for Maddie’s® Shelter Medicine Externship Program. Each agency must have a veterinary staff to supervise the extern during the clinical rotation, and each agency must be approved by the Maddie’s® Shelter Medicine faculty. All agencies must also be approved by the UFCVM. A list of current UF-approved agencies is available (listed below by agency type), and the Association of Shelter Veterinarians also maintains a list of other shelter medicine externships that may require UF approval. For more information about an agency's UF approval status, contact the Office for Students and Instruction.
