Non-surgical sterilization has the potential to be substantially less expensive and less traumatic for cats and dogs than spaying and neutering. It could also provide a low-cost and widely available alternative for non-lethal animal control, especially where veterinary services are not widely available. John is currently evaluating a contraceptive vaccine for feral cats that targets a naturally occurring reproductive protein, gonadotropin releasing hormone. The vaccine has shown great promise and resulted in a contraception rate of 74% for 30 months after a single injection in female cats.
