Animal CSI: When, Where, and How to Use Forensic Testing
Dr. Melinda Merck
The lecture will cover the important use of forensics in the investigation of animal abuse including the role of a veterinarian in animal cruelty reporting, investigation and prosecution. The forensic examination of the crime scene and animals will be presented including mapping and grave excavation. Evidence collection, preservation and analysis will be discussed. |

Exhuming the Buried Body: Start to Finish

This lecture will detail several methods which can be utilized in the recovery of physical evidence from buried remains. Depending on environmental conditions, time and personnel constraints, the forensic investigator will need to employ varying methodologies for the recovery of evidence. Each process will yield the scientific and legally required level of documentation for court presentation. |

Forensic Necropsy Wet Lab
This lab will teach the attendees how to conduct a forensic examination of a suspected victim of abuse. The lab will cover the external and internal postmortem examination. The attendees will learn how to recognize and collect forensic evidence and samples. They will also learn how to interpret and convey their findings. The veterinarian’s role in animal cruelty investigations is crucial. This lab will provide the skills needed to conduct a postmortem forensic exam and analysis.
